Heavy snow may seem more of an inconvenience than a cause of damage to your home, however heavy build ups of snow can lead to collapsed roofs or gutters, and blocked drains can cause flooding.

For your peace of mind, Luko has prepared some advice on how to protect yourself and your house during this extreme weather condition.

Things to do before the event to avoid damages :

  • Check your heating system, making sure your house is well heated during the storm.

  • Keep your property in a well-maintained condition (for example replace/ repair any loose roof tiles, guttering, and so on that could potentially come loose and cause damage to property);

  • The water in your pipes can freeze during extremely cold temperatures and snow storms. This can cause your pipes to burst, causing leakage problems later on. Prevent your pipes from freezing by making sure your home has adequate insulation. This includes insulating your exterior walls, crawl space or basement, attic and—in many cases—the pipes themselves.

  • Secure loose objects such as ladders, garden furniture, trash bins or anything else that could be blown around;

  • Park vehicles in a garage (if you have one) or keep them clear of buildings trees;

  • Think about melting snow: clear gutters and gutters. Check the water drains to avoid flooding.

Things to do after the event to report damages :

  • Do not touch electrical and telephone wires that have fallen to the ground.

  • When clearing snow, avoid obstructing the drainage manholes.

  • Do a damage assessment of your house and check the exterior and interior of your house to make sure everything is in order.

If the damage took place, you can submit your claim here and ask for help!
